Vicarious liability means that administrators need to be vigilant, informed and intentional about their staff.

This course focuses on the way in which administrators mishandled the abuse reports on assistant football coach, Jerry Sandusky, at Penn State University.

Not only was the abuse shocking, what shook the community was that the administrators had been informed multiple times about the abuse, but had failed to stop it.

And a final shock came when three administrators---including the former president of the university--- were sent to jail for their failure to protect those in their fiduciary care.

Jerry Sandusky's abuse was not of athletes, but of children. What's key is to realize the way in which abuse uses power, influence, popularity and good deeds as elaborate coverups for destructive conduct.

Using the precedent-setting Sandusky case, the focus of this course is on governance. We have entered into an era where not only those who abuse lose their jobs or go to jail, but involved administrators may as well.

This is why one of eight fundamentals in the R8 System is the need for safe, anonymous reporting.

It is why we work with StopIt.

StopIt doesn't just protect and save victims, it acts as an early warning system that protects administrators.

However, even with a reporting system in place, there is still an extreme need for re-education. The less-informed administrators are on what abuse is, and what it does to victims' brains, the more at risk this puts the organization's leaders. It's not an easy issue to work on, but it is crucial to organizational health and success. Ignoring abuse puts the whole organization at extreme risk.
This is why one of eight fundamentals in the R8 System is the need for safe, anonymous reporting.

Side-stepping the trap of "good and bad," the course examines from a neuroscientific perspective the administrative and leadership failure to protect victims from a known abuser at Penn State University.

The goal is to repair the broken system of abuse reports, protecting students and staff, holding those who abuse accountable, and managing the crisis.
